British West Indies. (Antigua - British Ship Letters). 1802. Stamp-less 'Consignee's folded letter written from Antigua dated 'July 20 1802' addressed to 'Christopher Codrington, Dodington Park, Gloucestershire' headed 'By Consignee's Bag', endorsed '1. OZ', routed via Liverpool with hand-struck 'Liverpool/ Ship Lre.' in black (Robertson S. 3), charged '2/3', erased and rated '3/8' in m/s on face.

"Consignee's Letter' indicating an expected exemption from the ship letter charge, but as over one oz the letter charged the full Ship Letter rate.
The letter mentions 'By Capt. Cook a 44lb Turtle to be sent.
Christopher Codrington inherited Betty's Hope sugar plantation on Antigua he owned a significant number of slaves. A number of letters called the 'Codrington Papers' can be viewed on film. This item appears to have escaped the archive.
