Stamp-less folded letter sheet written from Barbados dated '26th November 1856' addressed to France cancelled by Barbados double arc on reverse 'No 27' with circular 'No 27/ 1856 --' on reverse, endorsed 'per French Mail', routed via London with framed Anglo - French Accountancy 'Colonies/ Art 18' in carmine on face with London transit and French entry cachet '18 Dec' with Rheims receiver on reverse and taxed with hand-struck '30' indicating double letter rate.
The small circular date stamp is not listed by Ted Proud.
West Indies Mail Packet Service. 1st January to 31st December 1856. This special rate was in operation for one year and few examples of the currency hand-stamp have been recorded from any part of the world. This 'Article 18' from Barbados is very scarce.
