Basutoland. (South Africa). 1940. Envelope addressed to France bearing Basutoland SG 22, 3d blue tied by Sekakes double ring '25th June 40', routed via South Africa with bilingual 'Opened by Censor' South African label and instructional hand-stamp 'Mail Service/ Suspended' in violet applied, returned with 'Returned Letter Office/ Cape Town '14th August' on reverse.

This cover was in transit when Germany invaded France on 10th May 1940. Mail in transit through South Africa from neutral countries was hand-stamped with the instructional cachet 'Mail Service Suspended'.
