The mail situation was finally put on an official footing in August 1948 when the Post Office issued permits to post letters on board ships and provided official hand-stamps for the purpose.

The steamers would carry mail from port to port in the mail bag. Loose letters were cancelled by the Purser's fancy rubber hand-stamp and mail cancelled on board ship is very rare indeed.

The M.S. "Bandon" built by 'Higashi Nippon Jukogyo, Yokohama, Japan' in 1951 for the 'Thai Navigation Co.' The 'M.S. "Bandon" foundered on a reef of Patani in heavy weather on '25th October 1962.'

This fancy Steam Navigation cancel was used on the 'S.S. " Suddhadib" of the 'Siam Steam Navigation Company's fleet. The 'S.S. "Suddhadib" was built in 1918 and sunk during World War 2.

The 'jusqu'a' hand-stamp indicating the end of Air Mail service from Hong Kong to the Philippines. The cover was carried from Holland by 'K.L.M.' to Bangkok and then by Imperial Airways to Hong Kong on the weekly flight and further by ship to Manila.

Circular cachet in red translated as. The Delegated Ship Captain of the French Navy. Near the Commander in-chief of the Navel Forces Russian.

A unique item from the combined Russian and French Navy in World War One part of the Baltic Fleet. Around this time February early March 1917 Russia entered a turbulent period with the Russian (Bolshevik) Revolution.

Russia. (French Intervention Forces in Siberia). 1918. Envelope addressed to 'Monsieur Sergeant Lemee, Mission Militaire Francaise, Vladivostok' bearing on reverse Russia Yvert 65, 5k lilac (block of 8 and pair) tied by Chita doublering with Vladivostok boxed censor No 83 in blue on face.

Russia. (United States Intervention Forces in Siberia). 1919. Stamp-less envelope headed 'LT. PW Gerdes, Ord U.S.A. A.E.F. Siberia' and endorsed 'Official Mail' addressed to Harrisburg, Pa. cancelled by U.S. Postal Agency/ Siberia/ 1 duplex dated 'Jun 2 1919' with framed rubber 'A.E.F. Siberia/ Censored' and signed by the Censorship with Pittsburgh PA. on reverse 'June 25th.'

Major General Graves arrived at Vladivostok on September 1st 1918 with 5000 Eighth Division troops. Finding no threat to the city he ordered the troops to their Garrison. Graves stated that U.S. Troops were "not here to fight Russia or any group or fraction in Russia. A strict policy of neutrality was immediately announced to the troops. Bolsheviks and White Russians would be treated equally.

Envelope addressed to Amsterdam, Netherlands bearing SG 390, 2c olive (2), SG 418, 20c brown-lake, SG 420, 8c orange, SG 455, 8c on 40c orange and SG 456, 10c on 25c blue tied by Shanghai date stamp '27th April 40', endorsed 'via Siberia' with German censor tape tied by censor cachet in red with circular 'C' (Berlin) and framed instructional 'No Service/ Returned To Sender' in violet on face with hand-stamp 'Reexpedie apres avoir ete/ retourne a Shanghai' and returned with vernacular slogan '19th Aug 40'.

Translation for the hand-stamp 'Forwarded after to have Summer/ returned to Shanghai.

The Netherlands was occupied by the German forces May 10th.

Envelope written from the French Gunboat "BALNY" on the River Yang-Tse hand-stamped 'Canonniere "BALNY" in violet on reverse, addressed to France bearing 'Szechwan Province SG 5, 5c green and SG 20, 20c brown-lake tied by Chongking date stamp, endorsed 'via Siberia' with vernacular hand-stamp on face in violet and French arrival on reverse.

The French Gunboat "Balny" was active on the Blue and Yellow River (Yang -Tse) from 1914 - 1944.

Thailand. (Prisoner of War Camps in India). 1918. Picture post card of 'Siamese Women, Bangkok' addressed to 'W. Engelhardt, (No 2160), Prisoner of War Camp, Ahmednagor, India' endorsed 'Service of Prisoners of War', cancelled by Bangkok/ 2 date stamp '2nd August 18.'

Siam declared war on Germany and Austria on the 22nd July 1917, all German and Austrians residing in Siam were placed under arrest, businesses closed and nine steamers had been seized.

The Prisoners of War were held in Bangkok Internee Camp and the Siam German Concentration Camp, Ayudhya.

On the 13th February 1918 the Germans (180 men, 90 women and children) departed on the "Pia Samud" and 'Den Samud" for Ahmednagar Camp in India for the duration of the War.

(Occupied Enemy Territory Administration), Asmara, Eritrea' endorsed 'In a Camp en route somewhere in East Africa' dated 'Friday 25th April 1941', addressed to 'Miss Evelyne Husseuet, Heliopolis Sporting Club, Cairo Egypt' endorsed 'On Active Service' and bearing India SG 251, 8p violet tied by Army Post Office No 304' rubber date stamp with circular 'Deputy Chief Field Censor' in violet on face and Heliopolis arrival '7th May' on reverse.

Lovely item written from the campaign written by Capt. Maxwell Seton (whom after the war produced more than 15 Hollywood movies) to his sweetheart in Egypt. A very interesting four page text from TESSENEI the Indian Field and Army Post Office being in Tessenie, Eritrea 10.10.41 - 1.4.43.

Captain Maxwell was Chief Censor to the Occupied Enemy Territory Administration in Asmara, Eritrea and also in Cyrenaica.

(Affranchissement Etranger Destination), routed via MEMEL with hand-struck 'Memel/ 2 Jan' in black and boxed 'AV' (Van der Linden 418b), various m/s notations including '10' and '12 = 102 1/2' with Lyon arrival 'Jun 18' on reverse. Very fine.

Greece. (French Occupation of Crete). 1897. Stamp-less envelope addressed to France endorsed 'Corps D' Occupation en Crete/ Battalion D' Infanterie de Marine (Sitia)' cancelled by Sitia/ Crete double ring '9th Sept' with circular '8th Regiment D' Infanterie de Marine/ Batallion de Crete' and Paris arrival '17th Sept 97' on reverse.

In 1896 a rebellion against Ottoman rule erupted on the island of Crete, resulting in the Greco - Ottoman War of 1897 when Greek troops landed on Crete . The Protecting Powers (Great Britain, Russia, France, Italy, Germany and Austria - Hungary) imposed a blockade on Crete in 1897 and following Ottoman approval , established control of the island.

Greece. (Balkan War). 1913. Illustrated Patriotic envelope headed 'Long Live the Greek Army' addressed to Kifissia (Athens) bearing 'Victory' SG 256a, 10l rose tied by Thessalonique double ring '27th Aug 13' with Kifissia arrival '31st Aug' on reverse.

Very attractive and scarce cover from the Balkan Campaign.
