Pre stamp envelope written from Valparaiso dated 'March 2nd 1854', addressed to New Bedford, Mass with oval 'Forwarded By/ Nye & Co/ Commission Merchants/ Valparaiso' and charged with hand-struck '4' on arrival. Very rare printed shipping circular letter with fascinating letter on Whale ships from New Bedford, Nantucket and Fairhaven and the price of oil from Sperm, Humpback and Black Fish whale.
New Bedford was the largest and greatest whaling port on the United States eastern seaboard at this time.
