China. (Yunnan Province - Burma). 1941. Air Mail envelope written by 'Maj. Gen. Dennys, British Military Attaché, Chungking,' addressed to India bearing China SG 465, 5c green and SG 474, $2 brown and blue tied by Chungking date stamp '12th May 41', endorsed 'Air Mail via Rangoon', routed via Burma with circular 'Not Open by Censor/ Burma/ 27' in grey-green on face with Opened by Censor' label (red on white) tied by triangular 'Passed Censor/ D 11' applied in Calcutta with hand-stamp '14' censor cachet and framed Bangalore arrival '27th May' on reverse. Superb item showing the rare circular Rangoon censor No 27.
The $2 has been hand-stamped with a Bandit Control cachet in violet.
Major General Lance Dennys (B.M.C.) was with the British Military Mission in Chungking, his role was to advise Chiang Kai Sheck on the War with Japan and to persuade Chiang Kai Sheck on the defense of Burma. He died in a plane crash near Kunming in 1942.
