Registered Air Mail envelope written from the 'Friends Ambulance Unit, Kutsing, Yunnan, Free China' addressed to England bearing SG 596, $5 black and scarlet, SG 632a, 30c orange-red (pair) and SG 636a, $1 green (4) tied by Kutsing (Quing) vernacular dare stamp with provisional registration label, endorsed 'By B.O.A.C. to Egypt and Calcutta/ thence by surface to destination', large double ring Egypt 'M/ 2' censor on face. Very fine.
The Friends Ambulance Unit had been established in W..W.1 and attracted Christian and Pacifists to its cause. In China it became known as the China Convoy and worked under the Chinese Red Cross attached to the Kuomingtang Nationalist Army of Chiang Kai Shek funded by the British Foreign Office.
The F.A.U. was based in Kutsing (today Quing) with trucks going out over Yunnan, Kweichou and Scechwan.
