China. (Civil Internees). 1943. Stamp-less envelope written from 'Mrs M.A. Remedios (Portuguese), 29 Rue Montauban, Shanghai' addressed to 'Mrs Eva Golding (British), Y - 199 "B" Camp, C.A.C. Yangchow'/ c/o H.I.J.M. Consulate General, Foreign Affairs Section, Whangpoo Road', forwarded through the Red Cross in Shanghai with oval 'Comite International Croix Rouge Shanghai' in violet on face, hand-stamped '002497' and endorsed 'B' indicating Camp B Yangchow with blue crayon 'X7'.

On the 23rd January 1943 after more than a year of freedom the Japanese announced plans to intern foreign nationals living in mainland China.

The 1,355 internees bound for Yangchow had to assembly at Church House and walk to the jetty at Whangpoo, it took eight trips to reach Chinkiang and the camps.
