Danish West Indies. (British Occupation of Guadeloupe). 1812. Folded stamp-less entire letter written from 'BASSE TERRE' dated '20th Jan 1812' addressed to Lancaster, endorsed 'per Montague Packet/ Guadeloupe 20th Jan 1812' noted 'Double Letter' in m/s and carried via the British Post Office St. Thomas with St. Thomas fleuron dated 'Jan 23' on face and charged '4/4' payment for the double letter rate.

The British invaded the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe during the Napoleonic Wars. A amphibious force fought between 28th Jan and 6th Feb 1810. Guadeloupe was taken over as a British Colony for the remainder of the war, only restored to France after Napoleons abdication in 1814.

The Falmouth Packet "Montague/ Montagu" under Captain James Price sailed from Barbados Dec 29 1811 arriving Guadeloupe 'Jan 8th 1812' via St. Kitts, Antigua and Tortola arriving at the Danish West Indies and departing St. Thomas 'Jan 25th 1812' sailing then for Falmouth 'Feb 20 1812'.
