In the spring of 1915, Egypt was designated as a staging point for the Allied expedition against the Dardanelles with Alexandria being the prime base. When the venture failed Egypt remained important and was used as a base for the expeditions to Hedjaz and Palestine.
A second base was set up by the French at Port Said the entrance to the Suez Canal.
