Egypt. (French Detachment In Port Said). 1917. Stamp-less picture post card of 'Road of the Pyramids, Cairo' addressed to France endorsed 'Franchise' Militaire' and cancelled 'Corps D' Armees/ Port Said' date stamp 'Mars 6 17' with circular 'Legion D' Orient/ Bureau de Comptabilite' in blue with hand-struck 'Legion D'Orient/ Bureau de Compatabilite/ No 57'.

In the spring of 1915Egypt was designated as a staging point for the Allied Expedition against the Dardanelles with Alexandria being the prime base. When the venture failed, Egypt remained important and was used as a base for the expeditions to Hedjaz and Palestine.
A second base was set up by the French at Port Said the entrance to the Suez Canal.
