Emperor Tewodros 11 of Ethiopia wrote to Queen Victoria asking for help in the revolt against him and the constant military campaigns against his county. When the letter was not answered Tewodros took the British Consul Captain Cameron and several missionaries hostage. In response an Expedition led by Sir Robert Napier consisting of 13,000 British and Indian soldiers trekked three months to Magdala and surrounded the city. After a siege the Abyssinian King was defeated and the city burnt, the Expedition withdrew with the rescued men. King Tewodros took his own life.
