Registered Stamp-less Official mail envelope addressed to Papeete cancelled Maugareva/ Taiti double ring in violet '1st Avril 94' with framed hand-struck 'R' and endorsed 'R/ No 21' with circular 'Archipel de Gambier/ Magareva' in violet on face and reverse with Papeete receiver '18th Avril' on reverse.
Pre 1900 registered mail from Maugareva a small atoll in the Gambier Islands over 1000 miles southeast of Tahiti is very rare.
The islands were known for their pearls.
