Stamp-less envelope written from Gibraltar dated '16th Jan 1849' addressed to Virginia cancelled by Gibraltar double arc date stamp 'Ja 16' with adjacent 'Gibraltar/ Paid' undated circle, rated '4/-in m/s and endorsed 'Via Boston/ Ship/ M.S.' in red on face 'Feb 12' and charged with hand-struck '22' in red. Scarce item of Trans-Atlantic mail carried on one of the four pre-Treaty voyages of the Trans-Atlantic mails the so called "Restored Rates" period.
