Pacific Islands. (Malden Islands). 1956. Envelope addressed to 'The Postmaster, Malden Island, Western Pacific' bearing Great Britain (Wilding) 2 1/2d red tied by Puickeridge date stamp, endorsed 'Try Marshall Islands' with 'Return To Sender/ Service Suspended' hand-stamp in violet on face and Honolulu/ Dead Letter Branch date stamp on reverse 'Oct 16 1956'.
In 1956 the United Kingdom selected Malden as the Instrumentation site for the H - Bomb. A runway was built that year by the Royal Engineers.
The Malden Atoll was incorporated in the British Gilbert & Ellice Colony in 1972.
