Italy. (Lloyd Trieste Ship - Singapore). 1940. Picture post card of the 'Lloyd Triestino, Piroscafo "Conte Rosso" addressed to Switzerland bearing Italy Yvert 229, 25c green and Yvert 430, 50c violet tied by Lloyd Triestino/ Conto Rosso,' date stamp '17th Juin 40' (with stamps perfin "T" = 'Triestino Maritimo'), routed via Singapore with 'Passed By/ Censor 108/ Singapore' cachet in violet on face and framed 'Crown/ Passed O.9' in carmine (By Censor) cut out.

The 'S.S. "Conte Rosso" was an Italian transatlantic ocean liner built in Scotland 1921/22. After carrying passengers on the New York and South America route she transferred to the Trieste Bombay Shanghai route, an escape for the Jewish population of Austria and Germany as Shanghai did not require paid emigration visas. During WW2 she was used as a Troop ship and on May 24 1941 was sunk by the Royal Navy submarine 'H.M.S. "Upholder".
Lovely item posted on board 'S.S. "Conto Rosso" in the Far East.

Morenweiser in his British Empire Civil Censorship, Asia lists the censor numbers from '111 - 142'.
