In 1904 'Le Matin' sent three special news envoys to Manchuria to report on the theatre of hostilities from the Russian side of the Russo-Japanese War.
Jean Rodes was 35 years old and a correspondent for the Parisian 'Le Matin' he travelled from Marseille on the 'Messageries Maritimes' via the Suez Canal for Saigon and Hong Kong, then to Shanghai and Pekin to the frontier town of Chan-Hai-Kwan and Manchuria on the Golf of Petchili. He wrote on the Russo-Japanese War based at "Niou-Chouang'. He returned via the Transsiberian railway and made several more trips to China in later years.
