Netherlands East Indies. 1946. Air Mail envelope addressed to Holland bearing Netherlands East Indies SG 335, 1c slate, SG 336, 2c violet, SG 339, 3 1/2c grey, SG 461, 2c scarlet, SG 463, 3c green mixed with 'Indonesian Republic (Java and Madura) SG J5, 3c green, SG J11, 5c emerald, SG J12, 10c blue and SG J23, 10s (+10s) chocolate tied by Buitenzog violet date stamp with 'Kosteloos Uitreiken' hand-stamp. Scarce stamp on cover from the Independent Republic not valid.
The Dutch East Indies declared independence from the Netherlands at 10am, 17th August 1945. There followed four years of armed resistance and bloody conflict until the Dutch recognized Independence on the 27th Dec 1949.
