Netherlands East Indies. (Internment Camp Mail). 1940. Netherlands Indies Red Cross Air Mail envelope addressed to 'Au Bureau International De La Croix Rouge/ Palais du Conseil General, Geneve, (Suisse)" written from 'G.A.L. de Haan, Oude Hospitaalweg 24, Ambarawa Camp, Java' bearing Netherlands Indies SG 408, 55c violet tied by Batavia Centrum date stamp with adjacent 'Cdt. Intern, Kamp/ Ambarawa' date stamp '9th Dec 40' (two strikes) with 'Door Censuur' Geopend' label tied by circular 'Het Nederlansch Indische/ Roode Kruis' in carmine on face and reverse.
Ambarawa Internment Camp (Java) was located in a military hospital and housed 450 internees, (most had been transferred to Ngawai by November 40), the camp closed in March 41, this scarce cancel was in use December/ Jan.
