1941 | NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES

Ref: DR17745
  • £395.00

Netherlands East Indies. (Internment Camp Mail). 1941. Netherlands East Indies postal stationery card 3 1/2c grey written from Magelang Internment Camp dated '8th November 1941' with adjacent oval 'Militar Hospitaal/ Magelang/ Hoofd' in violet, addressed to the Soerabaja Orphan Chambers, routed via Magelang '8/11' with 'Gecensureerd' hand-stamp in red, routed via Medan with 'Gecensureerd/ 2' in carmine and boxed arrival '18th Nov'.
The 'Gecensureerd' censor hand-stamp is only known on mail from this hospital and is unique in carmine/ red being only known on one cover in brown. (See Nico de Weijer's excellent book on Postal Censorship and Internment Camp Mails in the Dutch Indies).
Mail from the Military Hospital Camp in Magelang is very rare, in July 1941 only 13 German patients were in the hospital.
Ex Paul Bulterman's Internment Camp collection.
