Netherlands East Indies. (Internment Camp - Red Cross Mail). 1940. Netherlands Indies Red Cross Air Mail envelope headed 'Nederlandsch-Indische Roode Kruis/ Tjikini 65 - Batavia Centrum' with 'Service Des Prisonniers de Guerre' and 'Franco De Port' addressed to 'Au Bureau International De La Croix Rouge/ Palais du Conseil General, Geneve, (Suisse)' bearing Netherlands Indies SXG 405, 20c violet tied by Batavia Centrum date stamp with adjacent 'Cdt. Intern-Kamp/ Banjoebiroe' date stamp '10th Dec 40' with circular 'Het Nederlandsch Indische/ Roode Kruis' in carmine on reverse and hand-stamp 'Gecensureerd/ 2', endorsed 'By K.L.M. to Iraq.'
The Internment Camp at Banjoebiroe was located in al old infantry barracks north of Ambarawa. On 9th August 1940 there were 187 women and 101 children interned there. The camp was closed on March 22nd 1941.
