Netherlands East Indies. (Luchtpostbrief). 1948. "Luchtpostbrief" military folded envelope headed 'Militair Portvri' and 'In Actieve Dienst' (On Active Service), cancelled by Batavia date stamp with large circular 'Veldpostkantoor/ Batavia' dated '16th Mei 1949' on face. Scarce item.
The Dutch East Indies declared independence from the Netherlands at 10am, 17th August 1945. There followed four years of armed resistance and bloody conflict until the Dutch recognized Independence on the 27th Dec 1949.
