Netherlands East Indies. (Veldpost). 1946. Air Mail envelope written from 'Inf X-V Brig, Palembang, Sumatra' addressed to Batavia, Java, headed 'In Actieven Dienst' (On Active Service) canceled by Veldpost/ Palembang date stamp '21st Dec' with orange 'Veldpost' label on face tied by Batavia/ Centrum arrival '31/12' on face. Very fine item sent during the War of Independence.
The Dutch East Indies declared independence from the Netherlands at 10am, 17th August 1945. There followed four years of armed resistance and bloody conflict until the Dutch recognized Independence on the 27th Dec 1949.
