D.V.G.' on face, cancelled by Batavia-Centrum '29th Jan 48' addressed to the Dutch steamer 'M.S. "Kota Inten" with circular 'DEV/ 2' censor cachet, endorsed 'Onbekend' (Unknown) with framed 'Retour' in violet and forwarded to Oranje-Boulavaard and on to Rotterdam bearing Netherlands postage due 40c blue tied by boxed 'Nietig/ Afgescheven' (Cancelled and Void) on face.
The "S.S. Kota Inten" served on the flagship Rotterdam Far East, converted in 1942 to a British War Transporter and then 1943 a New York Troopship, then in 1946 a Dutch transporter.
The Dutch East Indies declared independence from the Netherlands at 10am, 17th August 1945. There followed four years of armed resistance and bloody conflict until the Dutch recognized Independence on the 27 Dec 1949.
