Netherlands East Indies. (Luchtpostbrief). 1948. "Luchtpostbrief" military folded envelope headed 'Militair Portvri' and 'On Active Service' written from Poerwokerto addressed to the Netherlands cancelled by '18' date stamp. Very fine.
The Dutch Indies declared independence from the Netherlands at 10am, 17th August 1945. There followed four years of armed resistance and bloody conflict until the Dutch recognized Independence on the 27th Dec 1949.
