Netherlands East Indies. (Marine Post). 1946. Un-stamped Air Mail envelope headed 'On Active Service' addressed to the Netherlands cancelled by boxed 'Marine - Postkantoor/ Soerabaja 24 Jul 1946' in violet on face.
The Dutch Indies declared independence from the Netherlands at 10am, 17th August 1945. There followed four years of armed resistance and bloody conflict until the Dutch recognized Independence on the 27th Dec 1949.
