1850 | Netherlands East Indies

Ref: DR20846
  • £350.00

Netherlands East Indies. (United States). 1850. Folded letter written from New York (February 20th), endorsed 'per steamer 20th Feby', addressed to London and forwarded to Batavia, charged with hand-struck New York '5' in black (U.S. inland postage), sent 'Care of Baring Brothers, London' with London arrival 'Mar 4 1850' on reverse and 'London Paid' in orange '19th March' on face with red manuscript '1/4' (pre-paid rating to Batavia), endorsed 'Please Forward' on reverse with small red hands-struck 'via Southampton' and manuscript '160' Dutch cent due rating.

Letter entered the mails in New York and carried by Collins Line via Liverpool. Posted onwards by London agent "Baring Brothers" who applied the 'via Southampton' hand-stamp in red as a private marking to show desired routing of letter.
Letter than travelled by 'P & O' steamers "Indus", "Haddington" and "Achilles" to Singapore.

See 'The Richard Winter collection of Transatlantic mails' in Schuyler Rumsey sale 2013.
The Rumsey description notes the 'via Southampton' to being probably that of Baring Brothers, this letter proves the Rumsey/ Winter conjecture.
