Biak a small island north of Dutch West Papua was occupied by the Japanes in WW2 serving as a base for operations. American forces retook the island in the Battle of Biak and transferred control to the Royal Australian Air Force.
Due to the collapse of the Dutch Indies 'KNILM' airline during WW2 operations were re-established as Netherlands Indies Government Air Transport.
