Netherlands Indies. (Dutch Rule Restored). 1948. Air Mail envelope addressed to 'Lt General W. Schilling, Netherlands Military Mission in Tokyo, Japan' bearing Netherlands Indies SG 401, 5c ultramarine, SG 471, 7 1/2c olive, SG 478, 1g turquoise (pair) and SG 505, 45 on 60c ultramarine tied by Batavia Centrum date stamp '24th Feb 48' with 'Dept E.Z./ Batavia' hand-stamp and 'Dienst/ V.V.P.' (Vrij Van Port)with circular commercial receiver on face. Nice item of mail sent during the Dutch War of Independence.

The Dutch East Indies declared independence from the Netherlands at 10am, 17th August 1945. There followed four years of armed resistance and bloody conflict until the Dutch recognized Independence on the 27th Dec 1949.
