Ref: DR20102
  • £550.00

Serbia. (Anglo - Serbian Hospital - Prisoner of War Mail). Circa 1915. Serbian postal stationery card 10p rose written by 'Annie J. Dickinson' from Vrnjacka Banja addressed to Painswick, England cancelled by large double circule vernacular 'Prisoners Command/ Censored Office Department' in violet, routed via the RED CROSS.

Annie Josephina Dickinson had volunteered for service as a VAD (Voluntary Ad Detachment) with her sister and brother-in-law with the Red Cross in WW1 Serbia. She was imprisoned with them and repatriated to the United Kingdom via the Red Cross in Switzerland. Later she founded schools and hotels in Yugoslavia and was a fine artist.

The Anglo - Serbian Hospital grew from the appeal of Madame Grovitch and was sponsored by the Serbian Relief Fund in February 1915. By October the Hospital was under occupation of the Austrian Army. This card was mailed by Annie while detained as a POW sometime between October 15 and the 18th February 1916 when the Hospital staff who stayed at their post and did not join the Great Retreat were repatriated home via Switzerland.
