"Pioneer", Royal Navy, West Coast of Africa' bearing Great Britain SG 170, 1d lilac, 14 dots, (strip of four) tied by '382' numeral with Wimbourne back-stamp, routed via Liverpool with circular segmented transit on reverse. Very attractive.
Her Majesty's Ship "Pioneer" under the Command of Sub Lieut. Frank J. Thring sailed for Sierra Leone on the 15th Nov 1880. The duty of the West Africa Station was to guard the coast against slavery.
