South Africa. (Sweden). 1945. Registered envelope addressed to Stockholm, Sweden bearing South Africa SG 98, 1d carmine (block of four) and SG 99, 1 1/2d brown (pair) tied by Johannesburg double ring '12th May 1945' with matching registration label and bilingual 'Opened by Censor' label tied by censor cachet with instructional '(Surface) Mail Services Suspended' in violet on face, endorsed 'R.L.O.' in m/s and 'Returned R.L.O./ Cape Town' on reverse dated '16th May 45'.
Sweden was neutral throughout the war but by 1945 the surface mail route was not possible because of the dangers from attack. Very nice item.
Ex Robert Johnson.
