Daphne, San Francisco date 'Sept 15th 1851' addressed to 'Edward Cardwell, M.P., London,' routed via Panama with British Post Office transit 'Oct 7' and London receiver 'Nov 11th' and forwarded to Largs via Gretna. (A British stamp was applied for the forwarding but has been removed) Superb letter from Captain Fanshawe Commander of the "Daphne" with account of the Great Fire in San Francisco and the Gold Rush and life on Vancouver Island with the Hudson Bay Company as yet only half a dozen colonists.
