United States. (France). 1843. Stamp-less folded letter addressed to France written from New York dated 'Sep 30 43' with New York date stamp and 'Paid' hand-stamp with m/s/ '18' in black ink, endorsed 'per steamer "Caledonia", carried via Liverpool with faint boxed New Romney/ Ship Letter' on reverse and London transit, framed accountancy 'Colonies/ &c Art 12' on face, French entry cachet and rated '17' in m/s on arrival with oval '1d' for local post.

Lovely item carried on the Cunard Line steamer "Caledonia".

The Convention required the use of Article 12 for unpaid letters which went into effect on June 1st 1843.
