Packet in red 'Jun 17', hand-stamp 'PAID' in red and hand-struck 'U.S. PKT'' on face in black, endorsed in violet ink m/s '21' (US inland postage 5c + Sea Post 16c = 21c) with London transit 'Jy 1st' and Amsterdam receiver '3/7' on reverse and charged '40' Dutch cents due rating.
Lovely item mailed from Baltimore with scarce '3 PAID' date stamp carried by the 'S.S. "Hermann" of the 'Ocean Steam Navigation Company sailing from New York to Bremen via Southampton, mail disembarked and routed via London with m/s '4' in black ink indicating the Netherlands was debited '4' for Transatlantic and British transit.
London marked the U.S. PKT to show basis for GB debit to Netherlands (letter paid to England, leaving only transit to Netherlands unpaid). Dutch postage due consisted of 4d or 20 cents to G.B. and 20 cents internal fee in the Netherlands.
