Ref: DR20816
  • £95.00

United States. (Transatlantic Mail). 1856. Folded letter addressed to Amsterdam, Holland cancelled by Baltimore/ MD date stamp in blue 'Aug 8', with hand-struck 'PAID' with manuscript '25' in violet ink and endorsed '25' in pencil, routed via New York with 'New York U.S. Pkt./ Paid' in red dated 'Aug 9', with 'St. P.M./ Bremen' double ring '25/8' and Amsterdam receiver '27th Aug' in red on reverse with hand-stamp 'FRANCO'.

Unusual cover carried by the 'Ocean Steam Navigation Company' sailing from New York to Bremen via Southampton. This letter should have been taken from from the mails in Southampton and routed via London and Belgium to Holland., but went all the way to Bremen.

The 'FRANCO' indicates it was paid in cash with no charges to Great Britain or the Netherlands.
