Ref: DR20818
  • £95.00

United States. (Transatlantic Mail). 1853. Folded letter addressed to Amsterdam cancelled by 'New York/ 6' date stamp 'Jan 26' in black, endorsed 'Halifax Steamer of 26th Jan' with framed hand-struck 'NOT PAID', routed via France with 'Outre-Mer/Le Havre' French entry cachet in red '6th Mars 53' and Amsterdam '9/3' arrival on reverse. with manuscript '120' Dutch cents due rating.

No payment had been made of the British open mail rate of 5c so the New York postmaster had to send by sailing ship to France rather than the endorsement 'British steamer 'via Halifax". New York marked boxed 'NOT PAID'.

Letter noted double or '2' at upper left was charged 10 cents Dutch postage + 50 cents foreign postage and charges = 60 cents Dutch x 2 (letter between 7 1/2 - 15 grams) = 120 Dutch.
