United States. (Transatlantic Mail - Printed Circular). 1848. Folded printed (commercial) circular from 'Clason & Vles, New Orleans' dated 'March 13 1848' addressed to Amsterdam cancelled by New Orleans date stamp 'Mr 13' with 'PAID 3' hand-stamp in black, endorsed 'Printed Circular/ p. Steamer "Cambria", routed via Great Britain with manuscript '1/8' (UK debit to Holland) with Dutch entry cachet 'Engeland/over Rotterdam' in red on reverse (Van der Linden 1025), charged '120' in manuscript Dutch cents due rating and 'POST KANTOOR/ AMSTERDAM' wax seal on reverse.
Very scarce Transatlantic circular showing New Orleans 'PAI/ 3' rating hand-stamp for circular rate (unsealed circular for any distance in the U.S.).
London and the Netherlands treated the circular as an incoming packet letter not a newspaper and charged the item accordingly rating it '1/8' and '120' Dutch due (tax).
Another example is in Richard Winter's Transatlantic mails, Schuyler Rumsey Feb 4 2013 lot 698.
