United States. (Transatlantic Mail - Forwarding Agents). 1833. Folded letter addressed to Amsterdam written from New Orleans dated '23rd Dec 1833', endorsed 'Havre/ per "Redepi" with Havre (74) arrival '5th Mars 1834' and hand-struck forwarder 'Forwarded by/ Ed. Derenieblaine, Havre' in black on reverse (not listed by Rowe), Dutch entry cachet 'Frankryk/ over Arnhem' in red on reverse (Van der Linden 1523) with 'C.F.3.R.' hand-stamp on face in red (Correspondence Francaise du Troisieme Rayon) with Amsterdam arrival '12 Mar' on reverse with manuscript '20' debit to Holland and manuscript '195' Dutch cents due rating.

Scarce forwarding cover carried on the Havre-Whitlock Line on the steamer "Redepi" from New York to Le Havre.
The letter was delayed in the mail taking 12 weeks from New Orleans to Amsterdam and seven days ! from Havre to Holland.
The French used the stamps 'C.F.1.R.' to C.F.4.R. (see Van der Linden) known as 'Rayon marks' to indicate the distance from Havre. The higher the Rayon number the greater the French charge for transmitting the letter to the Belgian border.

A rare mark on mail from the United States via France and Belgium to the Netherlands. None in the Richard Winter sale of Transatlantic mails.
