United States. (Transatlantic Mail). 1857. Folded letter addressed to Amsterdam cancelled by New Orleans date stamp 'Dec 20 1857', endorsed 'Per steamer via Liverpool' with 'Boston/ 6' exchange debit date stamp 'Dec 30' and Boston/ Br. PKT' dated '30 Dec' on reverse with 'Et. Unis Serv. Br. A.C.' ambulant in red '12th Jan 58', manuscript '42' (pre paid rating for double rate), Amsterdam arrival '14/1' and manuscript '120' Dutch cents due rating with '240' manuscript red crayon on reverse.

Letter pre-paid 2 x 21c = 42c for the 1/4oz - 1/2 oz rate to the Netherlands under the U.S. - French postal convention. New York credited 2 x 18c = 36c to France. Since a British packet carried the letter across the Atlantic, the U.S. retained only 2 x 3c = 6c of the payment.
