Folded Printed Circular (commercial) printed 'The Merchants Exchange Prices Current and Shipping List' written from San Francisco dated 'Saturday, November 30 1850' and printed 'PER STEAMER "OREGON", addressed to Amsterdam, endorsed "Oregon" (erased) and endorsed 'Per "Baltic"/ Newspaper Postage', rated '4' in manuscript pencil, carried on the 'Pacific Mail Steamship Company' steamer "Oregon" to Panama and over the Isthmus by stage and rail, then 'United States Mail Steamship Company' steamer "Georgia" from Chagres to New York, large red '2' hand-stamp applied in New York (credit to U.K.) with oval 'Forwarded By/ Herckenrath & Van Damme/ N. York' on face in green, with small Belgian entry cachet 'Engeland/ over Ostende' in red on reverse (Van der Linden 1024) and manuscript '20' Dutch cents due rating and manuscript '12 1/2' on reverse, hand-stamped with triangular '1 1/2c/ Amsterdam' in blue (a fiscal tax on all printed matter mail from foreign countries (Zegalrecht).
The letter has been docked at San Francisco and sent under cover via Panama to New York, forwarding agent 'Herckenrath & Van Damme, New York' whom deposited the letter in the mails to U.K. unpaid.
Sent Transatlantic by 'Collins Line' steamer "BALTIC" via Liverpool and London.
Very early Newspaper Printed circular from San Francisco during the height of the Gold Rush. From late 1848 the city expanded rapidly. Merchants sprung up and advertised their products in printed circulars as the economy boomed.
