Very rare tax hand--stamp.

Military mail envelope headed 'Comite International/ Geneva/Red Cross' addressed to the 'French Red Cross, Djibouti, Cote des Somalis bearing Egypt Yvert 188, 2m orange and Yvert 195, 20m blue tied Cairo with Egyptian censor label and boxed 'Postal Censor/ 40' with 'Controle Postal' label and circular 'A/5' hand-stamp applied on arrival with oval 'Croix Rouge Francaise/ Comite de Djibouti' and Free French 'C.M.' circular censor. Superb item of Red Cross mail.

Egypt. (French). 1918. Picture post card of 'Canal de Suez' cancelled by military cachet 'Base Francaise de Port-Said/Infirmerie Ambulance du Camp/des Isoles et Travailleurs Coloniaux' hand-stamp in violet.

In the spring of 1915, Egypt was designated as a staging point for the Allied expedition against the Dardanelles with Alexandria being the prime base. When the venture failed Egypt remained important and was used as a base for the expeditions to Hedjaz and Palestine.
A second base was set up by the French at Port Said the entrance to the Suez Canal.

Air Mail envelope addressed to New York written from Jeddah bearing SG 46, 10pi black and mauve (pair) tied by Khartoum/Mails date stamp endorsed 'via Transatlantic Air Mail' erased with m/s 'Air Mail via Pan American Airways Service via Lagos' with Lagos/Nigeria transit and 'Censor' hand-stamp on face in violet. Lovely routing 'horseshoe' route via Hong Kong.
