On 8th April 1860 Britain and France declared war on China, French troops already assembled in Hong Kong opened the Bureau Central there, at the end of May the French military Command left for Shanghai and the Bureau Central moved in May/ June 1860.

After the bombardment of Papeete by the Germans on 22nd September 1914 a French Detachment was stationed in Oceania and Tahiti.
The two German Gunboats "Scharnhorst" and "Gneisenau" departed Papeete for the Marquisies island of Nuka-Hiva.
