China. (United States Yangtze River Boat Mail). 1925. Envelope headed 'United States Naval/ U.S.S. Monocacy/ Yangtze Patrol Force' addressed to the French Warship "Jules Michelet", Shanghai' bearing China 'Junk' SG 312, 2c green (pair) tied by Shanghai date stamp '7th Mat 25'. A very rare item.
The Yangtze Patrol gunboat 'S.S. "Monocacy" based in Chungking patrolled the Upper Yangtze.
British West Indies. (Jamaica - Great Britain). 1843. Envelope written from Jamaica endorsed 'Jamaica Mar 6 - 1843' addressed to London, charged '1/-' with framed 'PACKET LETTER' on face (Robertson P.4) applied in London and received 'Ap 21', re-directed to 18 Sloane Street bearing Great Britain SG 8, 1d brown (imperf plate 29) tied by Maltese Cross.
The only cover known originating in Jamaica with a London Packet Letter strike.
Packet Letters were applied to mail transported to and from Great Britain on vessels owned by the British Post Office.
Sudan - British East Africa. (Great Britain). 1931. Mourning Air Mail envelope addressed to Entebbe, Uganda, East Africa bearing Great Britain SG 419, 1d scarlet and SG 426, 6d violet tied by Davidsons Mains/ Mid Lothian date stamp '8th Dec', endorsed 'By Air Mail' with Entebbe arrival '17/12', forwarded to Kampala '18 Dec' and re-directed from Kampala '27th Dec 1931' to Sudan with Port Sudan '4th Jan 32' and Khartoum '6th Jan 32' on reverse.

Bechuanaland Protectorate. 1937. Registered Bechuanaland KG1 postal stationery envelope 'four pence' carmine upgraded with SG 100, 1d scarlet and SG 101, 2d brown tied by Gaberones Village double ring '30th Oct' with m/s 'R/ 9063' in blue crayon. At the date this envelope was posted Gaberones Village had no registered hand-stamp.
Bechuanaland Protectorate. Circa 1940. Stamp-less envelope headed 'On Active Service' addressed to England cancelled by oval 'Bechuanaland Protectorate Group/ A.A.P.C.' in violet. Very fine.
The African Auxiliary Pioneer Company was established in July 1941 recruiting Africans for the Allied War effort. Basutoland, Swaziland and Bechuanaland provided the men, 3000 enlisted from Bechuanaland.
France. (Great Britain). 1844. Folded letter written from Tours dated '2nd April 1844' addressed to London cancelled by Tours date stamp in red with boxed 'P.P.', (two, one under adhesive), rated '19' in m/s on reverse with London Paid on face in orange and forwarded to Devon bearing Great Britain SG 8, 1d brown (plate 40) tied by Maltese Cross obliterator and Plymouth arrival '7th April' on reverse. Attractive cover.
Belgium. (Great Britain). 1842. Folded letter written from Brussels dates '15th October 1842' addressed to London, endorsed 'Pre-Paid' cancelled by Bruxelles date stamp in blue '15th Oct 1842' and bearing Great Britain SG 8, 1d brown (imperf pair) plate 25, uncancelled but clearly belongs (one crossed by file fold), routed via Ostende with oval 'France Ostende' in blue (Van der Linden Fig 1500), rated '20' on reverse and charged '2/8' in m/s on face with London arrival '17th Oct' on reverse.
Sudan. 1946. Air Mail envelope addressed to New York bearing SG 43, 15m blue and chestnut (strip of four) tied by Khartoum date stamp '10th July 46' with hand-stamp 'By Air Mail' and framed instructional 'Insufficiently Paid For/ Despatch By Air Mail' on face. Scarce Air Mail cachet later than listed by Proud from (1.9.40) - (30.10.41).
Sweden. (Sudan - Aden -Ethiopia). 1936. Envelope (plus Ambulance cover_ addressed to 'Director General des Postes, Gore, Abyssinie, Occidentale, Afrique, via Soudan, Egyptian' bearing Sweden Yvert 197, 20 ore orange and 'Air Mail' Yvert 6, 50 ore blue tied by Helsingborg date stamp '31st Aug 36', routed via the Red Sea, opened by the Italian authorities in Aden and re-sealed with 'Amministrazione delle Poste e dei Telegrafi' label tied by two strikes of Aden '4th Oct 36', re-routed via Sudan with Port Taufiq '30th Oct', Cairo Station '30th Oct', Cairo-Asyut and Shellal-Halfa T.P.O. No 1' transit '3rd Nov', held in Khartoum with hand-struck 'UNCLAIMED' on reverse with m/s '31-1-1937' in red ink and oval 'Returned Letter Office/ Khartoum' dated '27th April'. routed overland via Egypt with bilingual oval 'Return To Sender' in cerise on face, via London with framed instructional 'Received in Damaged condition in the Returned Letter Office, London' in violet on face and put in special envelope for damaged mail (Ambulance cover) inscribed 'Inneliggande Forsandelse har ingatt hit I skadat skick' (contents entered here in damaged condition) and Malmo arrival '4th May 37', over eights months after first departing Sweden.
The Italian Invasion of Ethiopia began on October 3rd 1935 leading after many battles to the fall of Addis Ababa. Before he departed to exile in London Emperor Haile Selassie ordered that the Government of Ethiopia be move to Gore. At the end of November 1936 an Italian column occupied Gore and the Ethiopians were defeated on 16th December 1936.
This extraordinary cover could not be delivered due to the fighting and later occupation of Gore in southern Ethiopia.

"Usaramo" on reverse in violet dated '19 Apr. 1934' and 'Woermann-Linie A.G./ Deutsche Ost Afrika-Linie' label, addressed to Arnstadt, Germany bearing SG 50, 5m black and green, SG 51, 10m black and carmine and SG 52, 15m sepia tied by Port Sudan Quays date stamp '19th April' headed 'By Air Mail/ Mit Luft Post', routed via Khartoum with 'Khartoum - Port Sudan/ T.P.O. No 2' transit of the Red Sea Branch line and Sudan Air Mail/ Khartoum '20/4' on reverse.
The "Usaramo" was built in Hamburg in 1920. and was part of the Woermann Line German East Africa fleet, sunk in 1944 near Bordeaux during WW2.

Air Mail addressed to Plateau Province, Northern Nigeria bearing Norway Yvert 84, 1k green, Yvert 121, 40 ore grey (pair) and Yvert 131, 30 ore blue tied by Lillehammer double ring '14th June 37' with 'Med Luftpost' label, routed via Berlin-Zentralflughafen '15/6' and Sudan Air Mail/ Khartoum '18th June', Kano (Nigeria '25th June, Kaduna Junction and Kaduna North '24 Ju' and Kafanchan arrival '25th June' on reverse.
The main Air Mail service in 1937 to Nigeria was via Sudan.

Sudan. 1906. Sudan Postal Service 'Received Registered Article' receipt cancelled by Halfa date stamp '25th Nov 06', a strip of three 'No 363', 'No 364', 'No 365' addressed to Germany and signed by the Postmaster. Scarce to find Certificates of Postings that have survived.
Sudan. 1931. Air Mail envelope headed 'Ibrahim Hamw, Port Sudan' addressed to 'Customs, Juba' bearing SG 48, 10m carmine and black (2) tied by Port Sudan date stamp '24th Mar 31' with 'Air Mail' label, sent by train to Khartoum with 'Khartoum - Port Sudan/ T.P.O. 2' date stamp '24/3', then by Imperial Airways with Sudan Air Mail/ Khartoum '26th March' on face, received at Juba with 'Sudan Air Mail/ Juba' dated '27th March' on reverse. A very nice item of the internal Air Mail service with scarce overprint stamps on cover.

Envelope addressed to 'Poste Restante, Vienna, Austria' bearing Great Britain SG 8, 1d brown (imperf plate 74)tied by London numeral '11' routed via France with French entry cachet 'July 10' with hand-struck 'Wien/ 16 Jul' arrival on reverse, charged '5' and forwarded to Dresden, endorsed 'Recluse 1f 60' and rated '19' in m/s, re-directed to Cheltenham via London '21st Dec' and Cheltenham 'Dec 22', held until the 24th and forwarded again via London '25/12' to Lymington with dated arrival in blue on face '26th Dec.'

The town of Seria did not exist until oil was found in 1929. The Post Office opened (10.6.51).

Registered crested envelope of the '76th Hindustan Regiment' addressed to Halifax, Nova Scotia bearing SG 104, 1/2d on 4d deep brown (block of six) tied by Barbados date stamp 'Sp 28' with oval hand-struck 'R' and Barbados registered label, endorsed 'per 1st Mail', routed via New York '11th Oct' with St. Johns, New Brunswick '13/10' and receiver in Halifax 'Oc 14'. Very attractive cover.
Great Britain. (Sudan - Burma). 1932. Air Mail envelope addressed to 'Mr Waterson, Passenger per 'S.S. "Burma", Henderson Line, Port Said' bearing Great Britain SG 429, 1 1/2d brown and SG 421, 2d orange tied by Lewisham slogan '17th Oct 32' with 'Recu Par/ Avion/ Alexandria' and Port Said '23rd Oct, the ship had sailed and the cover was sent via 'Shellal - Halfa T.P.O. No 2' to Port Sudan '1st Nov', (again missed ship) and 'By Air Mail' imprint erased and re-directed to Rangoon, Burma with '
Shellal - Halfa T.P.O. No 1', Cairo and Port Said '7th Nov', forwarded on arrival in Rangoon to 'c/o B.C.M.S. (Bible Church Missionary's Society), Mohnyin, Upper Burma.
The Henderson Line was part of the British and Burmese Steam Navigation Co. They sailed fortnightly from Port Sudan to Rangoon.
Barbados (Hungary). 1892. Barbados postal stationery double reply card 'penny halfpenny' surcharge 'one penny' violet upgraded with SG 107, 1d carmine tied by boothill obliterator with Barbados date stamp 'Oc 6', addressed to Hungary with framed instructional 'LATE FEE' on face and Budapest arrival 'Oct 22nd.'
Difficult item of stationery. Very attractive.

Very nice item of mail from Suriname forwarded via Barbados paying the un-opened printed matter rate.
Bechuanaland. (South Africa). 1932. Registered Official Mail envelope headed 'On His Majesty's Service' addressed to New York written from Mafeking with oval 'Post Office Mafeking/ 3-Aug 1932/ Head Office for Bechuanaland Protectorate' in violet on face and bearing SG 75, 1 1/2d brown, SG 78, 2 1/2d cobalt-blue and SG 79, 3d violet tied by Lobatsi double ring '5th Aug' with oval ''R' hand-stamp and endorsed 'Registered/ Lobatsi No (1251) in red ink, routed via Kimberly with New York arrival 'Sept 7.' on reverse.
The Lobatsi date stamp was used in Mafeking 'B' from (22.1.32) - (16.11.32). Mafeking did not receive a Registration hand-stamp until 1935, the hand-struck 'R' is applied in Lobatsi.

Air Mail envelope written from the 'Assistant District Commissioner, Juba' addressed to Scotland bearing SG 41, 5m olive and black and SG 44c, 4pi ultramarine and black tied by Sudan Air Mail/ Juba' '27th May 43' with Khartoum transit and bold circular 'A' on face in violet. Lovely quality.
The letter code 'A' was purely for internal use indicating the handling of certain letters by the censor.
Code 'A' from Juba is recorded by John Little (25.4.42) and two dates known to Mike White 18 Aug 43 and Sept 43.
Brazil. (British Ship Letter). 1847. Stamp-less folded letter written from Bahia dated '15th January 1847', endorsed 'per the "Francis", landed at Hastings with framed 'Hastings/ Ship Letter' in blue (Robertson S.3), rated '8' in n/s and London back-stamp '22nd March 47' in red on reverse.
After 10th January 1840 the '8d' uniform ship letter rate applied to anywhere in the country.
Lovely item. The Hastings Ship Letter in blue recorded 1846 - 1847.

The letter originally charged 8d in m/s but re-calculated at '1/8', India Letter 4d and Inland (618 miles) 1/4d.

"Champlain" via Egypt with bilingual double ring 'Censorship./ Dept/ 26' in carmine on face and 'Shellal - Halfa/ T.P.O. No 1' arrival 'Sep 12' on reverse.
Scarce early Egypt censor. Little records the usage (5.9.39) - (30.9.39).
Sudan. (Ethiopia). 1944. Air Mail envelope written from 'Sudan Interior Mission, Private Mail bag to Kurmuk, Postmaster Khartoum, Anglo-Egyptian Sudan' addressed to Illinois bearing Sudan SG 46, 10p violet and grey tied by Sudan Air Mail/ Khartoum date stamp '24th Mar 44' with 'P.C. 90/ Opened by Examiner/ MM/ 4243' label, endorsed 'Air Mail'.
After the Italians declared war on 10th June 1940, hostilities began on the Sudan - Ethiopia - Eritrea border. The Italians occupied Kurmuk on the 7th July 1940 and the Post Office was closed. Nice usage of the Private Mail Bag scheme.

Very nice item with three country censorship sent from the Upper Congo along the River Congo to Boma and then east to the Congo/ Sudan border and overland through Egypt.
Belgian Congo. (Sudan - British East Africa). 1941. Air Mail envelope written from 'The Africa Inland Mission, Aba' addressed to Mombasa, Kenya bearing Belgian Congo Yvert 171, 2 5c indigo and Air Mail Yvert 5, 15f brown and black tied by Aba date stamp '7th June 41', routed via Juba (Sudan) '12th June' with British East Africa 'Opened By Censor' label with '314' censorship hand-stamp in violet and label tied by Mombasa/ Kenya receiver '14th June' on reverse.
Aba is in the Upper Congo and the cover would have crossed the Congo/ Sudan border and flown direct to Mombasa.
Belgian Congo. (Tanganyika). 1942. Envelope headed 'This letter contains letter in Gujarati', addressed to Kikwetu, Lindi Province bearing Belgian Congo Yvert 199, 1f50 chocolate and grey and Air Mail Yvert 8, 1f carmine (2) tied by Kasongo date stamp '4th July 42', endorsed 'via Dar-Es-salaam'/ T.T.' with Albertville transit '8/7' and 'P.C. 90/ Opened By Examiner/ R/ 15' Tanganyika label applied.
According to John Little the Tanganyika censor tape Type V1Ba number 15 is recorded known '10 Mr 45'.
Palestine. (Sudan - Egypt). 1939. Air Mail envelope written from Saraford addressed to Atbara, Sudan endorsed 'via Egypt', bearing Palestine SG 97, 10m grey and SG 100, 50m purple tied by Sarafand double ring '27th Dec 39' with 'P.C. 22/ Opened By Censor/ 71/ 5133' black on red label with printers imprint (31329 - 21000 - 11.11.39 - G.C.P.) tied by boxed 'Palestine/ Opened And/ Passed By/ Censor No H 25' in violet on reverse with circular 'Censorship Dept./ M' on face in carmine and Atbara/ Mails arrival '5th Jan 40' on reverse.
Nice item censored in Haifa to an unusual destination.

Picture post card of 'Washington Hotel, Colon' posted on the steamer "Altrato" dated '24th Oct 1905', addressed to Germany bearing Yvert 89, 2c rose (pair) tied by Baeija date stamp '2nd Nov', routed via Kingston/ Jamaica 'Nov 4' with framed 'Paquebot' and oval 'The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company/ Posted on High Seas' on face in violet, hand-struck 'Puera de Baeija' and Alsterdorf arrival 'Dec 20.'

John Marc also had a fine selection of the Chinese Labour Force which are not often seen, he built this selection over thirty years. One of the darker aspects of World War One was the plight of 12,000 Chinese workers who were recruited by the British Army from the North of China in 1916 to serve on the battle front in France as labourers, trench diggers, munitions carriers, mine disarmers and corpse bearers under often inhumane conditions. A large number were also struck down by the devastating Spanish flue of 1918.
