Portugal and its Colonies being neutral throughout the war were free to communicate with Germany subject to Allied censorship. But by late 1944 Western Europe was a war zone and no mail routing was available (Marseille was liberated 28th August 1944). Consequently any mail arriving arriving in Lisbon was therefore returned.

Very rare printed shipping circular letter with fascinating letter on Whale ships from New Bedford, Nantucket and Fairhaven and the price of oil from Sperm, Humpback and Black Fish whale.
New Bedford was the largest and greatest whaling port on the United States eastern seaboard at this time.
Australia. (via South America & Panama). 1857. Stamp-less envelope written from Melbourne dated 'September 18 1857' addressed to Boston, endorsed 'via Callao', erased and noted 'via Panama' with hand-struck 'Paid - To/ Panama' on face and circular 'Steamship/ 10' applied in New York.
Nice item from New South Wales sent via ship to Panama, carried across the Isthmus to Aspinwall and on 'USMSC' to New York.
French Colonies. (Oceania - Sweden). 1901. Envelope addressed to 'His Excellence, Ministre de Affaires Chargers, Stockholm' written from the Consulate de Suede et Norvege a Papeete - Tahiti' with oval consul cachet on reverse and endorsed 'Envoi du Consulate de Suede et Norvege a Papeete - Tahiti' bearing Oceania Yvert 11, 50c rose tied by Papeete/Tahiti date stamp, routed via San Francisco 'Ap 18' and New York with Stockholm arrival on reverse '4th May. and hand-stamped 'Utrikes Dept./ 5 Mai 1901' in violet on face.

John Marc also had a fine selection of the Chinese Labour Force which are not often seen, he built this selection over thirty years. One of the darker aspects of World War One was the plight of 12,000 Chinese workers who were recruited by the British Army from the North of China in 1916 to serve on the battle front in France as labourers, trench diggers, munitions carriers, mine disarmers and corpse bearers under often inhumane conditions. A large number were also struck down by the devastating Spanish flue of 1918.
