Lovely item written by 'Officer Jourdan' of the First French Military Mission in Japan on his voyage East. He writes from the Straits of Malaysia that he has sailed two days from Ceylon. A unique item posted from Singapore by French paquebot.
Also enclosed a small photo taken by "Joudan" of a fishing canoe and mentioned in the text.

Registered Air Mail envelope addressed to Holland bearing Johore SG 116, 25c purple and green (3) tied by Scudai/ Johore double ring with matching registration label and 'Malaya Patriotic Fund' label on reverse, routed via Singapore with 'Passed Transmission/ Singapore/ 15' on face and 'Opened by Examiner / 5496' label. Superb item to the Netherlands routed via Singapore with censor.
Mail from Scudai is not so commom. The double ring in use (8.12.38) - (5.11.41).

Gardner, British Prisoner of War, Java Camp Y, Java', with framed 'Crown/ Passed by Censor' in carmine with boxed 'Mare a Ikan' (Transferred to Malaya) in violet and m/s 'M' with framed 'Ken'etuzumi' (Censored) with oval Japanese censor seal and endorsed 'Recd. 8-1-45' in pencil on face.
Three groups of prisoners around 1000 men were sent to Ambon, Haroekoe or Flores to build the airfields. The Japanese used code letter 'Y' for the mail.
Gardner had been in Ambon and then transferred to Malaya. Scarce item.

Its a real pleasure to add a magnificent selection of French Colonies from Africa, Asia, The Caribbean and Oceania. Very fine pre-stamp, British Post Office, Charged Mail, Advice of Receipt, Printed Matter and postage due mail. A lovely selection of censor mail, some with five or six censor cachets and labels, routed Trans-Africa, two Ocean or over the Atlantic with some unusual destinations.

John Marc also had a fine selection of the Chinese Labour Force which are not often seen, he built this selection over thirty years. One of the darker aspects of World War One was the plight of 12,000 Chinese workers who were recruited by the British Army from the North of China in 1916 to serve on the battle front in France as labourers, trench diggers, munitions carriers, mine disarmers and corpse bearers under often inhumane conditions. A large number were also struck down by the devastating Spanish flue of 1918.
