A remarkable incoming item from France to Penang. Only a few known.

Envelope written on board the French steamer "PEIHO", endorsed 'Dans le Detroit de Malaisie' (in the Straits of Malaysia) dated '29th Avril 1872' addressed to France bearing France 'Type Empire' Laure' Yvert 30, 30c brown (pair) and Yvert 31, 40c orange tied by 'Anchor' in lozange with adjacent French paquebot 'Ligne N Paq. Fr. No' date stamp (Salles 1921), dated '3rd Mai' in Singapore, boxed 'PD' and Lyon arrival on reverse.
Lovely item written by 'Officer Jourdan' of the First French Military Mission in Japan on his voyage East. He writes from the Straits of Malaysia that he has sailed two days from Ceylon. A unique item posted from Singapore by French paquebot.
Also enclosed a small photo taken by "Joudan" of a fishing canoe and mentioned in the text.

A very lovely item paying the News Band wrapper rate to Europe.

Malaya. (Johore). 1940. Registered Air Mail envelope addressed to Holland bearing Johore SG 116, 25c purple and green (3) tied by Scudai/ Johore double ring with matching registration label and 'Malaya Patriotic Fund' label on reverse, routed via Singapore with 'Passed Transmission/ Singapore/ 15' on face and 'Opened by Examiner / 5496' label. Superb item to the Netherlands routed via Singapore with censor.

Mail from Scudai is not so commom. The double ring in use (8.12.38) - (5.11.41).

Malaya. (Straits Settlements - Philippines). 1879 Envelope written from the 'French Consulate in Singapore' with circular 'Consulate de France/ Republique Francaise a Singapore' on reverse addressed to the French Consulate in Manila bearing Straits Settlements SG 13, 6c mauve (pair) tied by bar obliterator with framed 'Consulate de France/ Singapore' on face and adjacent 'Singapore/ Paid' in red 'Oc 29 79' with Marseille receiver on reverse. Superb destination. Exhibition item.

Malaya. (Selangor). Circa 1942. Air Mail envelope addressed to England bearing Selangor SG 68, 1c grey and SG 75, 8c grey (3) tied by 'F.P.O.' date stamp and hand-stamped 'Captain R.E. Adjutant, H.Q. R.E. Northern Area' with framed 'Passed by Censor/ No 3484' censor cachet in violet. Very fine.

Netherlands Indies. (Malaya - P.O.W. Mail). 1944. Post card headed 'Prisoners of War Post/ Service des Prisonniers de Guerre' written from Colwyn Bay with dispatch dated '27th March 44' addressed to 'Aircraftsman 1st Class. P.T.O. Gardner, British Prisoner of War, Java Camp Y, Java', with framed 'Crown/ Passed by Censor' in carmine with boxed 'Mare a Ikan' (Transferred to Malaya) in violet and m/s 'M' with framed 'Ken'etuzumi' (Censored) with oval Japanese censor seal and endorsed 'Recd. 8-1-45' in pencil on face.
Three groups of prisoners around 1000 men were sent to Ambon, Haroekoe or Flores to build the airfields. The Japanese used code letter 'Y' for the mail.
Gardner had been in Ambon and then transferred to Malaya. Scarce item.

Very attractive and scarce item of underpaid mail from Prai, Penang.

Very underrated item in 40 years I have seen very few such items.

Scarce item of mail from Burma with Straits Settlements postage dues.
