Dehra Dun, British India' addressed 'To The International Red Cross Committee, Geneve, Delegation for Sumatra/ for Mr. P.C. Danzmann c/o "Deusche Konsulat", Medan, Sumatra' with hand-stamp 'Service of Prisoners of War' in violet with boxed 'Crown/ Passed/ DHN/ 2' and 'DHN/ 9' hand-stamp in violet of Dehra Dun, routed via Geneve, Tehran, Moscow and Tokyo with circular 'Japanese censor cachet in orange and arrival Japanese censor in Medan.
Paul Danzmann was one of 478 German internees being transported from Sibolga to British India via Colombo on the 'S.S. "Van Imhoff" when she was bombed by Japanese war planes off Sumatra '19th January 1942. Out of the 478 internees only 65 survived, 48 made it to the Indies island of Nias and 17 washed ashore on Poelou Simoek.
The cover is written by the son of Paul Danzmann, who had left Alas Vallei Camp on one of the two earlier ships.
Although word of the disaster had reached the Indies no news was known in Dehra Dun Internment Camp. This cover is written by the son of Paul Danzmann from Dehra Dun Camp not knowing if his father had survived the disaster. Paul Danzmann had made it safely tom Nias Island.

The Internment Camp at Banjoebiroe was located in al old infantry barracks north of Ambarawa. On 9th August 1940 there were 187 women and 101 children interned there. The camp was closed on March 22nd 1941.

Netherlands East Indies postal stationery card 3 1/2c grey written from Salatiga Protection Camp dated '28th April 1941' with Beschermingskamp voor/ Duitsche Vrouwen/ Salatiga/ Beheerder' hand-stamp and cancelled Salatiga '28/4', addressed to Soerabaja, routed via Medan with 'Gecensureerd' in carmine on face.
The Salatiga Protection Camp hosted 43 German women and 51 children. Mail from this camp is very rare.

The message is in Malay.

The 'Gecensureerd' censor hand-stamp is only known on mail from this hospital and is unique in carmine/ red being only known on one cover in brown. (See Nico de Weijer's excellent book on Postal Censorship and Internment Camp Mails in the Dutch Indies).
Mail from the Military Hospital Camp in Magelang is very rare, in July 1941 only 13 German patients were in the hospital.

Siantar' in violet (signed by the Commandar) and cancelled Pematang Siantar '19/6', addressed to an internee at Raja Protection Camp for women, routed via Medan with 'Militaire Censuur/ Medan' hand-stamp in violet, Brastagi arrival '21/6' and charged '3' in carmine applied at Raja Protection Camp.
The Pematang Siantat internment camp housed 171 internees (men) from Aceh and Sumatra's East coast. The camp closed on 3rd October 1940.

Ex Bulterman who noted Tjimahi was in Dutch authority territory. The sender was interned in the Pangka Camp which was controlled by the Republican Army.

Registered 'Dai Nippon' postal stationery card 3 1/2c olive-grey upgraded with 'Japanese Occupation' SG 10, 20c olive tied by Sarangan date stamp '6th March 44' with matching registration label, addressed to the Javanese Bank, Djakarta with Djakarta '9/3' and Djakartakota '10/3' and circular Japanese Occupation arrival in violet 'March 18' with framed 'Ket'etsuzumi' (censored) on face.
Very rare registered postal stationery card from the Japanese Occupation. The German woman and children around 400 were housed in the "Scoola Djerman" (German School), they departed for Germany in 1946.
The card is written in Malay by an Indonesian lady married to a German who was captured in 1940 and deported in in 1942 to Suriname.

Japan. (Netherlands East Indies - Internment Camp Mail). 1941. Picture post card of the "M.S. Asama Maru" written from Kobe dated '13th July 41' bearing Japan SG 322, 10s claret tied by Kobe vernacular date stamp addressed to 'Mr Arnold Speisser, Centraalinterneeringscamp, Alesvallei, Kota Tjane, Blok A, Barak "2", Sumatra, Neth East Indin', routed via Medan with 'Gecensureerd/ 4' censor hand-stamp in carmine. Scarce item of mail from Japan into Ales Vallei Internment Camp (Aceh), Sumatra. A total of 2,285 German internees were housed in 6 Barracks, by late December 41 most had been transferred to Dehra Dun, British India.
The Indies Government gave German woman and children from the Protection camps a chance of repatriation via Japan to Germany at their own expense. On July 4th 1941, 338 women and 322 children left for Japan on the Japanese passenger ship "Asama Maru", hired by the Swiss Consul. However due to the German invasion of the Soviet Union there was no opportunity for them to return to Germany via Siberia. The German evacuees were then housed in Northern China and Japan.

As a reprisal against the Internment of Germans in the Netherlands Indies on the 7th October 1940, 116 persons were interned at Kamp Ravenberg, St. Michielgestel, 29 KPM employees and 87 prominent Dutchmen.

W.H.F. Klien was both a Dutch soldier and philatelist, he wrote this Veldpost card while recovering in the P.O.W. Hospital.

Berkelaar, Bandoeng, Java' with framed 'Jawa Yokuryusho Ken'etsuzumi' (Java Internment Camp (Censored) hand-struck in carmine and circular seal of "Tachi", used back 'Balasan' reply half with rectangular 'Ken'etsuzumi' (censored) in blue-green censor with rectangular seal of "Takahashi" in orange.
David Tett and Spink state "These reply cards are very scarce". One of the few known double reply cards 'Kirim' and 'Balasan' still attached used by the sender and returned by the receiver.

Stamp-less envelope written from a liberated Dutch soldier previously in Manilla now in a temporary camp at Menaire on Morotai Island addressed to Soerabaja with oval 'Luchtbeschermings Dienst/ Soerabaja/ Hoofd Sector/ V1' in blue (Air Defense Service Chief/ Sector v1) and circular 'Ned Ind. Roode Kruis/ FD. Soerabaja' on face in carmine.
Very rare item of liberation mail.

Netherlands East Indies. (P.O.W. in Malaya & Java). 1945. Netherlands East Indies Japanese Occupation 'Dai Nippon' postal stationery card 3 1/2c grey written from 'A. Bunder, Bankong, Semarang' endorsed 'Tawanan Militair' (Military Prisoner) addressed to 'Mr F.P.H. Bunder, Dutch, Sergeant, Camp Malaya, Furyo Shuyosho No 1' (Japanese Prisoner of War Camp No 1, Malaya) with oval seal of "Asanuma" and endorsed 'Pakanbaroe' in blue crayon with bold '2' on face.
It was assumed Bunder had been taken POW in Singapore but he had been transferred to Pakanbaroe.
More difficult stationery card issued in January 1945 for civilian use writing to interned P.O.W.'s.

Siebers, Salemba 27, Djakarta' with framed' 'Jawa 1' (Java district 1) in violet and forwarded to 'Kramat Camp' in Batavia with endorsement in blue and Camp No 2065' anoined '27th August 1944' the date the card was received by Mrs Siebers.
Unrecorded "Marai" three syllable hand-stamp not noted by David Tett in his book on the Dutch Indies 'Paradise Lost' or Singapore and Malaya 'The Changi Connection'.

Netherlands East Indies. (Internment Camp Mail). 1940. Netherlands East Indies postal stationery card 3 1/2c grey written from Pematang Siantat Internment Camp dated '14th June 1940' with oval 'Militair Detchement/ Interneeringakamp/ P. Siantar' in violet (signed by the Commander) and cancelled Pematang Siantar '14/6', addressed to an internee at Raja Protection Camp for women, routed via Medan with 'Militaire Censor/ Medan' hand-stamp in violet and charged '3' in carmine applied at the Raja Protection Camp.
The Pematang Siantat Internment Camp housed 171 internees (men) from Aceh and Sumatra's East coast. The camp closed on 3rd October 1940.
Very attractive item with short lived censor.

Interesting item.

David Tett notes only one censor seal from "Hachita" is known.

Netherlands East Indies postal stationery card 3 1/2c grey written from Berg en Dal, Soekaboemi Camp dated '25th March 41' cancelled by oval 'Interneeringskamp Berg en Dal/ Soekaboemi/ Commandant'm in violet and signed by the Commander, cancelled Soekaboemi '26/3', addressed to the Sindanglaja Protection Camp with 'Gecensureerd/ 2' censor hand-stamp applied in Medan in carmine on face.
Scarce item from Soekaboemi Internment Camp, after the Germans Consulate staff were evacuated only the most difficult and dangerous 'one hundred' woman remained and the camp was converted to a Protection Camp. On the 24th May 1941 the woman were left for Tjibadak Protection Camp.
