Dennys, British Military Attaché, Chungking,' addressed to India bearing China SG 465, 5c green and SG 474, $2 brown and blue tied by Chungking date stamp '12th May 41', endorsed 'Air Mail via Rangoon', routed via Burma with circular 'Not Open by Censor/ Burma/ 27' in grey-green on face with Opened by Censor' label (red on white) tied by triangular 'Passed Censor/ D 11' applied in Calcutta with hand-stamp '14' censor cachet and framed Bangalore arrival '27th May' on reverse. Superb item showing the rare circular Rangoon censor No 27.
The $2 has been hand-stamped with a Bandit Control cachet in violet.
Major General Lance Dennys (B.M.C.) was with the British Military Mission in Chungking, his role was to advise Chiang Kai Sheck on the War with Japan and to persuade Chiang Kai Sheck on the defense of Burma. He died in a plane crash near Kunming in 1942.

Rare item of taxed mail from the French Occupation of Madagascar.
No postage would have been required for mail to France or another colony but mail to Belgium was taxed.

Air Mail envelope addressed to Paris bearing French Maroc Yvert 113, 50c grey and Yvert 120, 2f brown tied by Tanger- Chehifier/ Maroc date stamp '8th May' with Air Mail label and hand-struck 'Correspondance Avion/ retardee de descendre/ par suite de l' accident aerian/ survena le "9 Mai 1933" on face with Paris arrival.
The plane was on the line Casablanca - Toulouse. She left Barcelona at 2.30pm for Perpignan and crashed near Villadrau, the crew and three passengers were killed.
A violet or black cachet was applied to the mail. Very fine.

French Colonies. (British Internee in French Soudan). 1942. Stamp-less envelope written by 'George Whalley, Internee Britannique, Tombouctou, Soudan Francaise, A.O.F.' addressed to 'P. Johnson, Camp D' Internement, Kan Kan, Guinee Francaise, A.O.F. (Afrique Occidentale Francaise) cancelled by 'Tombouctou/ Soudan Francais' double ring '17th Feb 42' with Siguiri/ Guinee Francaise transit '5th Mars 42' on reverse.
The writer George Whalley was a radio officer on the "Criton" which was torpedoes by Vichy French Warships. He was taken to hospital in Dakar and on to Koulikoro Camp before being sent to the Internee Camp at Timbuktu in the French Sudan and after down the Niger River to Kankan Camp in French Guinea. He was one of 32 internees in Timbuktu from the ship plus 10 natives. He wrote to the Camp in Kankan which housed only eight internees until the arrival of the men from the "Criton" and later a group of Dutch and Norwegian seamen. He was in interned for 21 months before his release and passage home via Freetown.

The North West part of France was occupied by German Forces after the invasion in May/ June 1940, the Germans censored the letter but returned the mail from abroad that had been sent into occupied France.

Very nice item of mail through Portuguese Africa.
French Colonies. (Djibouti). 1902. Envelope from the 'Franco-Ethiopian, Railway' addressed to Djibouti bearing Cote des Somalis Yvert 23, 0.05 on 75c violet and orange and Yvert 29, 10 on 50c blue/ rose tied by 'Cote Francaise des Somalis/ Djibouti' double ring. Very fine.
New Hebrides. (United States). 1900. Registered United States postal stationery envelope 2c rose upgraded with SG 271, 3c violet, SG 275, 8c violet/brown and SG 286, 5c blue tied by oval 'Reg Div./ Springfield, Mass/ Nov 6 1900', addressed to 'The Congregational Mission, Vila, New Hebrides', endorsed 'via Sydney', New South Wales', Australia', routed via San Francisco with registration label and 'Nov 12' transit, arrived in New Hebrides with m/s instructional 'Not Known at Vila, New Hebrides' with boxed 'Unclaimed' in pink on face, returned via Sydney with circular unframed 'Dead Letter Office/ Sydney, N.S.W.' in carmine on reverse dated 'Mr 128 1901' and circular 'Registered/ Sydney' 'March 25' and oval 'Registered Branch/ Dead Letter Office 'Jun 5th' on return in Mass with hand-struck 'Return Receipt Demanded' struck thrice. Rare item of early mail into New Hebrides.
French Colonies. (Wallis & Futuna). 1910. Envelope headed 'Protectorat de Iles/ Wallis et Futuna/ Resident de France' addressed to 'Monsieur Grossin, Colonel de Gendarmerie, Saigon Cochinchina' bearing New Caledonia Yvert 92, 10c rose tied by 'Pt Francais/ Wallis' double ring '9th Nov 10' with Saigon Central arrival '28th Jan 11' and forwarded to France with Loir receiver '1st Mars 11' on reverse. Very rare item of mail from Wallis to French Indo-China.
Wallis used the stamps of New Caledonia until 1920.
French Maroc. (Bermuda). 1941. Air Mail envelope addressed to New York bearing French Maroc Yvert 182, 1f brown (2 on reverse), Yvert 188, 2f green (6), Yvert 193, 3f brown (3) and Yvert 197, 10f scarlet (2) tied by Tangier slogan, routed via Lisbon and intercepted by the British in Bermuda with 'Opened by Examiner/ 4319' label with '1.C. /' hand-stamp and hand-struck wavy line 'Released' in violet on face and reverse.
A very nice item sent Air Mail over the Atlantic and held during the war, subsequently a little edge ware.
Censor hand-stamp not recorded so early by 'Burrows' and U.K. number not recorded.
French Morocco. (Maroc Local Post). 1896. Envelope addressed to the 'Receiver of the French Postes, Tangier' bearing French Maroc Yvert 3a, 10c black/ lilac tied by Mazagan/ Maroc double ring '5th Mai', routed via Marrakesh with 'Mazagan to Marrakesh' Local Post Yvert 48, 20c brown/ lilac tied by 'Brudo/ Marrakesh' date stamp with French Post Office Tanger arrival '12th Mai 96' on reverse. Lovely internal mixed combination.

Its a real pleasure to add a magnificent selection of French Colonies from Africa, Asia, The Caribbean and Oceania. Very fine pre-stamp, British Post Office, Charged Mail, Advice of Receipt, Printed Matter and postage due mail. A lovely selection of censor mail, some with five or six censor cachets and labels, routed Trans-Africa, two Ocean or over the Atlantic with some unusual destinations.

John Marc also had a fine selection of the Chinese Labour Force which are not often seen, he built this selection over thirty years. One of the darker aspects of World War One was the plight of 12,000 Chinese workers who were recruited by the British Army from the North of China in 1916 to serve on the battle front in France as labourers, trench diggers, munitions carriers, mine disarmers and corpse bearers under often inhumane conditions. A large number were also struck down by the devastating Spanish flue of 1918.
