Dennys, British Military Attaché, Chungking,' addressed to India bearing China SG 465, 5c green and SG 474, $2 brown and blue tied by Chungking date stamp '12th May 41', endorsed 'Air Mail via Rangoon', routed via Burma with circular 'Not Open by Censor/ Burma/ 27' in grey-green on face with Opened by Censor' label (red on white) tied by triangular 'Passed Censor/ D 11' applied in Calcutta with hand-stamp '14' censor cachet and framed Bangalore arrival '27th May' on reverse. Superb item showing the rare circular Rangoon censor No 27.
The $2 has been hand-stamped with a Bandit Control cachet in violet.
Major General Lance Dennys (B.M.C.) was with the British Military Mission in Chungking, his role was to advise Chiang Kai Sheck on the War with Japan and to persuade Chiang Kai Sheck on the defense of Burma. He died in a plane crash near Kunming in 1942.

No postage would have been required for mail to France or another colony but mail to Belgium was taxed.

French Morocco. (Crash Mail). 1933. Air Mail envelope addressed to Paris bearing French Maroc Yvert 113, 50c grey and Yvert 120, 2f brown tied by Tanger- Chehifier/ Maroc date stamp '8th May' with Air Mail label and hand-struck 'Correspondance Avion/ retardee de descendre/ par suite de l' accident aerian/ survena le "9 Mai 1933" on face with Paris arrival.
The plane was on the line Casablanca - Toulouse. She left Barcelona at 2.30pm for Perpignan and crashed near Villadrau, the crew and three passengers were killed.
A violet or black cachet was applied to the mail. Very fine.

Envelope addressed to Kankan, Guinee Francaise bearing Grand Liban 'Air Mail' Yvert 69, 5p green tied by Bekfaya date stamp stamp '3rd Jan' with circular Free French 'C.P./ 4' cachet in violet, endorsed 'via Francaise', routed via Egypt and Nigeria with bilingual 'M/2/ Censorship' and hand-stamp '81' and '29' in violet (Egypt censor) with Nigeria triangular censorship and 'Controle Postal/ Commission A/ Afrique/ Equatoriale Francaise' censor cachet on face with 'A. 7' in red and transits of the Belgian Congo 'Elisabethville '12/3' and Leopoldville '29/3' on reverse with Kankan/ Guinee Francaise receiver and French Africa censor tape. Very scarce routing through Africa and wonderful item of destination mail.

Registered envelope addressed to Ethiopia bearing Somalis Coast Yvert 13, 30c brown and rose (2) tied by Djibouti/ Cote Francaise des Somalis' double ring with hand-struck 'R' and French Post Office 'Dierre-Daoua/ Abyssinie' receiver on reverse (Pothion Type 04FB). Very fine.

French Colonies. (Djibouti). 1897. Envelope addressed to France bearing Yvert 12, 25c rose and blue tied by Djibouti Postes date stamp in blue '16th Juin 97', routed via French paquebot with octagonal 'Ligne N Paq. Fr. No 10' date stamp '28 Juin' with Toul arrival on reverse. Very fine.

French Colonies. (British Internee in French Soudan). 1942. Stamp-less envelope written by 'George Whalley, Internee Britannique, Tombouctou, Soudan Francaise, A.O.F.' addressed to 'P. Johnson, Camp D' Internement, Kan Kan, Guinee Francaise, A.O.F. (Afrique Occidentale Francaise) cancelled by 'Tombouctou/ Soudan Francais' double ring '17th Feb 42' with Siguiri/ Guinee Francaise transit '5th Mars 42' on reverse.
The writer George Whalley was a radio officer on the "Criton" which was torpedoes by Vichy French Warships. He was taken to hospital in Dakar and on to Koulikoro Camp before being sent to the Internee Camp at Timbuktu in the French Sudan and after down the Niger River to Kankan Camp in French Guinea. He was one of 32 internees in Timbuktu from the ship plus 10 natives. He wrote to the Camp in Kankan which housed only eight internees until the arrival of the men from the "Criton" and later a group of Dutch and Norwegian seamen. He was in interned for 21 months before his release and passage home via Freetown.
