The 'S.S. "Conte Verde" was an Italian Ocean liner used as an exchange ship during World War Two. The 'Conte Verde' departed Shanghai '29th June 1942' with a mix of America diplomats, journalists and civilian internees bound for Lourenco Marques '22nd July 42 where the Exchange took place.

British Solomon Islands. 1942. Air Mail envelope written and endorsed from "Sister Merle Farland, Barakoma' dated 'February 26 1942' addressed to her nursing companion 'Miss D.J. Whitehouse, Epsom, New Zealand' bearing British Solomon SG 40, 1d scarlet (pair) and SG 59, 3d blue tied by pencil with 'British Solomon Islands/ Red Cross Appeal 1d' label in blue and carmine on reverse and endorsed 'By Air Mail,' forwarded on arrival to Gisbourne with Newton receiver '2nd March.'

Sister Meerle Farland decided to stay at her post in Biua Village, Vella Lavella and during the Japanese Occupation aided the coast-watchers Kack Keenen and Henry Josselyn.

This item was carried behind enemy lines via a small canoe from the Solomons to New Guinea.

Robertson notes the Newcastle Type 5 as scarce and used only 1889 - 1890, this example a year earlier than recorded by Robertson.

Burma. (French Indo-China - Postage Dues). 1906. Envelope addressed to Saigon bearing India SG 123, 1a carmine tied by Rangoon date stamp '18th Dec 1906', underpaid with circular 'T' hand-stamp and m/s '18c' in blue crayon, routed via Singapore 'Dec 20' and Saigon bearing French General Colonies postage dues Yvert 18, 5c blue (millisieme '3' complete row of six with side margins plus single) applied and tied on arrival with Travinh double ring '29th Dec' (struck five times).

"Sarpedon" Suez' bearing Great Britain SG 94, 4d vermilion (plate 13, pair) tied by Paisley/ 277 duplex (struck twice) dated 'Oc 23rd 73', routed via London, endorsed 'via Brindisi' with adjacent British Post Office 'Suez', arrival 'Oct 31.'

The 'S.S.' "Sarpedon" was part of the Blue Funnel Line Ocean Steam Co. commenced by Alfred Holt which in 1864 began sailing from Liverpool to the Far East. The 1st "Sarpedon" sank of Ushant in 1876.

Seychelles. (India - Postmarks). 1896. Seychelles SG 26, 18c on 45c brown and carmine cancelled by 'B - 1' obliterator and Bombay squared circle 'Au 21 96'. Very fine.
